1.1 Safety information
Read the safety messages before installing or operating the mount. This manual uses three signal words. The word and icon identify the message level; color provides an additional visual cue.
Operating requirements, compatibility information and helpful explanations. Read these messages to understand the setup and the conditions a feature requires.
Actions or conditions that can damage the mount, telescope, accessories or cables. Follow the stated precaution to avoid equipment damage.
Hazards that can cause personal injury, including serious injury from falling equipment, moving parts or unsafe solar observation. Follow the stated precaution before proceeding.
Keep people clear of the telescope's travel, secure all attached loads and identify the STOP control before commanding motion. Safety functions, including EC HA Limit and AEB, supplement these precautions. Read Chapter 06 before configuring or relying on them.
General safety precautions
This mount is not intended for use by children. Do not allow children to install, operate or handle it. Keep children and bystanders away from the telescope, counterweights, cables and moving equipment, even when the mount is stopped.
If you notice abnormal sparks, smoke, a burning smell, excessive heat or unexpected movement, stop using the equipment immediately. Press STOP for unexpected motion when it is safe to do so. Switch off and isolate the power supply if you can reach it safely; keep clear of hot or damaged parts. Do not restart to see whether the problem has cleared. Have the equipment inspected by WarpAstron support before further use.
Fasten the mount to a compatible tripod, pier or secured adapter before powered movement. A mount standing on a table can appear stable at one latitude angle or axis position and tip as the axes rotate. Secure the telescope and counterweights, check the complete travel, and keep hands, clothing and people clear of pinch points. Support each load before loosening its attachment or disconnecting power.
Never place fingers, hands or any other part of your body in a gap that can narrow or close as the equipment moves. Keep clear of pinch points within the mount body and between the mount, telescope and tripod or pier. During GoTo and high-speed slewing, these gaps can close rapidly and cause serious injury. Check the complete travel before starting, keep everyone clear while the equipment moves, and never reach into a closing gap to adjust a cable or prevent contact. Press STOP and confirm that all motion has stopped before approaching or adjusting the setup.
Never look at the Sun through a telescope or finder without suitable, correctly installed solar filters and an appropriate solar-observation procedure. Keep an unfiltered instrument from being pointed at the Sun.
Use the supplied 24 V / 200 W adapter or a verified supply within the WD-20EP's 12–25 V DC, 10 A input specification, with the specified 5.5 × 2.5 mm connector and correct polarity. The input rating and each saddle output rating describe different circuits. Check cables and insulation before use. Keep connectors and electronics dry; do not connect wet or damaged equipment. Disconnect the front-panel DC input before changing saddle power connections: the mount's front-panel switch does not turn off Port A/B PD power. Do not substitute cables merely because their connector shells fit.
The supplied AC power adapter, its mains plug and any AC extension connection must remain dry. Do not use the adapter outdoors in damp conditions or where rain, spray, dew or condensation may reach it. Keep it and all mains connections in a dry, protected location; if that is not possible, do not connect AC power. Never place an AC connector on wet ground or handle a wet adapter or plug while it is energized. If moisture reaches the adapter or rain threatens the setup, stop operation and disconnect the mains supply from a dry, safe point before handling it. Do not reuse an adapter that may have taken in water until it has been inspected by qualified service personnel. The mount's DC input rating does not make the AC adapter weatherproof.
Keep STOP accessible throughout operation. Inspect attachments, cable routing and safety settings before each session and after any change to the equipment. If position, coordinates or protection status is uncertain, stop and resolve it before further movement. Do not bypass an unexplained protection event or open the enclosure for an improvised repair.
1.2 About this manual
This manual covers the WD-20EP, with the 2026 Advanced Hand Controller (AHC). It takes you from installation through connection, observation, safety configuration, firmware updates and storage. Start with Chapter 02 for your first session.
The AHC menu names and screenshots follow the supplied AHC 1.1.0 interface reference. Check the installed mount and controller versions in Settings > About before using a version-dependent feature. A mount update and an AHC update are separate operations.
WD-20E, WD-20P and WD-15E are different products. Do not use their firmware files or assume that their power accessories and optional functions apply to WD-20EP.
The telescope, accessories and counterweights can move unexpectedly or fall if their attachments are loose. Secure the complete setup, keep people clear of its travel, and identify the STOP control before commanding motion. Keep children away from the equipment; it is not intended for their use.
1.3 Product introduction
The WARPDRIVE WD-20EP combines the WD-20E EC drive architecture with two USB-C saddle ports for power near the telescope. Its servo motors drive the reducers directly; an absolute encoder measures the final RA output axis. The saddle ports reduce the number of long external power leads that must follow the axes. Port B also provides a mount PC connection route. See 4.9 Saddle power and data before connecting equipment.
The mechanical figures later in this manual illustrate the shared WD-20E / WD-20EP chassis geometry. They identify common adjustments but do not replace the WD-20EP's own saddle-port labels or electrical ratings.
The mount operates as a German equatorial mount (GEM) for polar-aligned tracking, or as an altazimuth mount with the corresponding mechanical and software configuration. This manual's first-use sequence uses GEM mode.
The main operating functions are manual movement, GoTo, tracking, guiding, Home and Park. The AHC adds a touchscreen, joystick, GPS, target catalogs and a wireless command bridge. ASCOM, INDI and compatible LX200 clients provide computer control.
Three different concepts matter for safe operation:
- EC HA Limit provides preventive control by monitoring encoder-based RA travel against configured east/west boundaries, reducing the risk of unsafe travel caused by incorrect sky coordinates.
- AEB provides passive/reactive protection after abnormal motor loading is detected. It can mitigate consequences to a limited extent; heavy loads and inertia affect its response.
- Altitude and meridian limits use pointing and observing-state information to constrain operation.
These functions have different purposes and prerequisites. Read Chapter 06 before changing them. They complement physical clearance checks; none establishes clearance for every telescope and accessory arrangement.
1.4 Getting to know the mount
| Part or control | Use |
|---|---|
| Saddle and two clamp knobs | Secure a compatible Vixen or Losmandy dovetail. |
| Saddle USB-C Port A | USB-PD output for a compatible telescope-side device; check its negotiated voltage and cable rating. |
| Saddle USB-C Port B | USB-PD output and an additional mount USB serial channel. Use USB-A-to-USB-C for data-only PC control, or a suitable USB-C-to-USB-C power-and-data cable with a compatible mini PC. Connect mount DC power before computer USB; see 4.9. It is not a bridge from the front-panel PC port or a general-purpose USB hub. |
| RA and DEC assemblies | Move the telescope in equatorial operation. |
| Latitude locks, range-setting fastener and fine adjuster | Set the elevation of the polar axis. |
| Azimuth locks and opposed fine adjusters | Aim the polar axis horizontally. |
| Bubble levels | Assist tripod/base setup; they do not replace polar alignment. |
| Base attachment threads | Attach the mount to a compatible tripod, pier or adapter. |
| DC input and power switch | Supply the mount and saddle PD circuits; the switch controls mount operation but does not disconnect saddle PD power. |
| Computer connection | Connect a computer through the mount's PC interface. |
| Controller/guiding interface | Connect the supplied AHC cable to the designated controller interface. |
| Home control | Initiate the mount's documented Home operation. |
The connector shell alone does not identify its electrical function. Read the label beside each port. The saddle ports, front-panel PC and HC interfaces have different purposes; see wired connections and saddle power and data before plugging in a USB-C cable.
Front-panel controls and indicators
Identify each label on your own mount before connecting equipment. The front panel contains the power control, Home button, connection ports and three indicators:
| Control / indicator | Function and check |
|---|---|
| Power switch and DC input | Switch mount operation and accept the specified 12–25 V DC input, up to 10 A. The supplied adapter is 24 V / 200 W. Saddle PD power is available whenever a live DC supply is connected, even with this switch off. Check connector size, polarity and cable seating before connecting DC. |
| Home button | Hold for approximately 0.5 seconds, then release, to start a physical return to Home. The blue STATUS light becomes continuously lit during the operation. Holding too long or pressing again cancels the return; see 5.4 Home. |
| Power indicator | Red, continuously lit during normal powered operation. Illumination alone does not confirm a controller connection, correct coordinates or a safe movement state. |
| Blue STATUS indicator | Flashing blue: tracking. Continuously lit blue: GoTo or slewing, including the Home return. Confirm the actual motion and completion in AHC rather than relying only on the light. |
| EC encoder-status indicator | Flashing green: normal encoder status. Flashing red: encoder fault; stop movement and check the reported encoder/reference status before continuing. A normal indication alone does not confirm an enabled EC HA Limit or a valid Home reference. |
| PC and controller interfaces | Connect only the device and cable specified for each labeled port; see 4.3 Wired connections. |

The three lights serve different purposes. Do not interpret the power or EC light as a confirmation that homing is complete or that movement is safe. For an unexpected indication, stop and check the reported controller/encoder status before continuing.
Record the model and serial number from the mount label and Settings > About. Keep your purchase record, mount firmware version and AHC version with this information. If the physical label and software identification disagree, resolve the identification with support before updating firmware.
1.5 Package contents and optional accessories
The WD-20EP package contains:
- WD-20EP mount head and 2026 Advanced Hand Controller.
- USB-C to USB-A data cable for computer connection.
- 1 m USB-C to USB-C controller cable.
- 1 m USB-C PD-to-12 V DC, 3 A cable with a 5.5 × 2.5 mm device plug.
- 1 m USB-C PD-to-12 V DC, 5 A cable with a 5.5 × 2.5 mm device plug; use only where the selected saddle port and device support that load.
- 24 V / 200 W AC adapter for the mount input.
- Tracking accuracy report, aluminum transport case with EVA foam, and an included hex key. Check the fastener size before using the key.
The two 1 m PD-to-DC cables are outputs from the saddle to compatible 12 V accessories. They are not replacements for the 24 V mount adapter and must not be plugged into the mount's DC input. For other combinations, including the optional WarpAstron PD Hub, see 4.9 Common power arrangements. Confirm the supplied items against your order.
A tripod/pier, extension, counterweight shaft, counterweights and telescope accessories depend on your order. Check the order configuration before treating an item as missing. Keep the packaging for transport or service. Use a correctly fitting tool for each fastener; the included key is not necessarily the correct size for every tripod or adapter screw.

Saddle power and data at a glance
The advertised voltage/current figures are USB-PD capabilities, not an instruction to force a voltage onto a device. A compatible sink requests a supported profile; a passive USB-C lead or an incorrectly specified PD-to-DC trigger cable may not deliver the required voltage. Both saddle outputs step voltage down and cannot exceed the mount's DC input voltage: with a 12 V input, 15 V and 20 V PD output is unavailable and a 12 V PD-to-DC lead cannot boost the voltage. The advertised maximum of each port does not guarantee that both ports can supply their separate maxima at the same time, especially with a lower-voltage or current-limited input source and an operating mount. Port A/B can remain powered with the front-panel switch off whenever live DC input is connected. Use the supplied 24 V adapter for the intended full-power configuration and check the total load. See the power arrangements and connection procedure and AHC Power display.
Check whether a device needs 5, 12 or 20 V before connecting it. The included PD-to-DC leads are intended to deliver 12 V to compatible 5.5 × 2.5 mm accessories after successful PD negotiation; do not assume that connector size alone makes a device compatible. Never connect one saddle output to another power source, to the mount DC input, or to a USB host port that is not specified for that role.
Payload mass, RA torque and tripod stability are separate constraints. Check all three. The RA brake rating is lower than the maximum powered operating torque; do not rely on it to hold an excessively unbalanced load during a power failure. Reduce the offset, use a suitable counterweight arrangement, and support the equipment when handling or removing it.
The published periodic-error figure describes the drive; it is not a guaranteed guiding RMS or an exposure-duration guarantee for every setup. Seeing, polar alignment, wind, flexure and the imaging scale also affect results. See payload assessment and guiding.
Use the WD-20EP's specified input connector and the supplied 24 V adapter. Older WD-20 and WD-20E power instructions describe different input and saddle-output arrangements and must not be substituted for this model. Wireless availability can also vary by region.
